Sunday 31.03
It was Easter Sunday and we made a little Easter Egg
Hunt. From Ju I got a candle light
dinner coupon which I am very much looking forward to. I was not so original
and just hid some chocolate eggs behind the African trees. On the other side of
the river we could see Mozambique which we will visit later on our journey.
We drove for 4 hours to Chipata (380km) and
another two hours to the South Luangwa National park. In the dark we arrived
at Crocodile Valley camp at the Zambezi River. So far this is probably one of
our nicest camp grounds we stayed in.
Monday 1.04:
For the first time since long we set our
alarm clock to 5 am to do a game drive in the park at sunrise. It is one of the
most beautiful parks we have been in so far with plenty of wildlife. The night
before everyone we talked to promised us to see leopards. At one point in the
park we got stuck in a muddy ditch for the first time on our trip. A Ranger
helped us out with the help of his truck and our winch.
He told us to follow
him if we want to see leopards. As promised just after ten minutes he led us to our first leopard,
a truly beautiful and graceful animal. After 4 hours we happily returned to the camp.
In the afternoon we decided to go on a
guided night safari. We were the only ones on the elevated seats of the safari
truck. We saw the sunset at a lagoon with hundreds of hippos and crocodiles.
The highlight came at the end when we witnessed a leopard killing an impala. It
approached the prey slowly and silently. With a sudden leap it jumped on the
back of the impala to bite it’s neck. The death struggle of the poor impala took
about 5 minutes. As in a movie script a hyena was drawn to the kill by the
smell of the blood. In big strides it came running towards the leopard which to
our surprise escaped leaving his hard earned dinner to the hyena. It started
taking big bites from the prey. Astonished by what we had just seen we left
back to our camp.
